Parent-Infant Attachment and the Impact on Adult Relationships
What happens to us during the first two years of life has a huge impact on how we relate as adults. Adverse circumstances can literally shape the structure of the infant’s brain. Our attachment styles form neural pathways that continue to be played out in our adult loving relationships. This workshop will help you think about your clients from an attachment perspective … the person operating from the needy greedy Pre-Occupied Attachment Style, the Avoidant Attachment (who will be reluctant to engage in therapy), the Ambivalent (who blows hot and cold about you as their therapist) and the Disorganised Attachment Style (who is all over the place, and barely coherent!).
Mary will draw on the work of Glyn Hudson-Allez and bring together the thinking from neuroscience and developmental psychology. She will explore the impact of our attachment style on our adult intimate relationships and sexual styles.
Topics covered will include:
- The development of the infant brain
- The physiological development of secure and insecure attachments
- The seven ‘pre-programmed’ emotional circuits
- The implication of right brain and left brain growth spurts
- The different attachment styles
- The impact of disruptions to the lust and sexual template
