Soul & Psyche – The Healing Journey of Poetry
A workshop with William Ayot
Mon, 28 September 2020 18:00 – 20:00 BST

Sigmund Freud said that everywhere he went, he found a poet had been there before him. This interactive evening of poetry for men and women fleshes out what James Hillman (and John Keats before him) saw as the healing journey of “Soul Making”. This is a workshop for both therapists AND for members of the general public.

The Engine of Shame
A workshop with Juliet Grayson and William Ayot
Mon, 12 October 2020 6 – 8 pm British Summer Time

We continue our monthly exploration with a look at the way shame triggers and induces both our drives and our dysfunction. Behind the success of a thrusting executive or the downcast expression of a shrinking non-achiever, we can often find the same overwhelming shadow of shame. In this interactive event, William Ayot and Juliet Grayson will be exploring what shame can activate – addiction, workaholism violence, perfectionism, or anti-social behavior.   This is a workshop for both therapists AND for members of the general public.

Creating Rituals for Healing & Change
A workshop with William Ayot
Thu, 22 October 2020 13:00 – 15:00 BST

It is said that the Soul, or the Psyche doesn’t do data – it thinks in images. Shamans and medicine teachers have understood this for millennia, creating healing rituals and initiatory processes that give the soul/psyche symbols and messages that can be absorbed at the deepest level. In this interactive introduction to ritual structure and design, poet and ritualist, William Ayot, author of Re-enchanting the Forest: Meaningful Ritual in a Secular World, shows us ways to safely create transformative rituals for healing and change.  This is open to therapists, coaches, facilitators and the general public.

Shame Trauma and Abuse
A workshop with Juliet Grayson and William Ayot
Thurs 12 November  2020 6 – 8 pm Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

Our third exploration will focus on the emotional consequences of trauma and abuse. Our relationship to shame can grow out of a single traumatic event, or decades of recurring slights and cruelties. We follow many streams from initiating wounds to internalised self-shaming. Exploring shyness and self-criticism on the one hand, and overt self harm and self-destruction on the other, we shine a light on ways to self-compassion and wholeness.  This is a workshop for both therapists AND for members of the general public.

Poetry, Healing and Emotion workshop with William Ayot
Tue, 1 December 2020 13:00 – 15:00 GMT

Healers have seen poetry as a vital resource since the dawn of time. A poem’s ability to carry meaning, feeling and the keys to understanding is uncontested – but how do we use a poem to its best effect ‘in the room’. This highly interactive session looks at practical ways we can better use the healing power of poetry and metaphor in therapeutic, coaching and teaching environments. Adding our repertoire and gaining confidence we can begin to deliver poems with pin-point accuracy. Please bring pen and paper.  Open to all therapist, healers, coaches and health workers.

A workshop with William Ayot
Mon, 23 November 2020 18:00 – 20:00 GMT

There’s a certain kind of quiet that comes over a group of men when one of their number reads a poem – intense, focused, crackling with feeling… In his second evening of poems exploring the masculine soul, award-winning poet William Ayot explores another mythic story, stopping off en-route to read soulful poems of grief and loss, wonder and hope – as well as inspiring poems from his own life-journey and experience. [N.B. This event focuses on male issues but, as before, women are particularly welcome.]
This event is open to therapists, coaches, facilitators and the general public.

Shame and Relationships
A workshop with Juliet Grayson and William Ayot
Thursday 17th December 2020 6-8pm GMT

As the winter holidays loom and families gather, William Ayot and Juliet Grayson continue their exploration of shame, and its inheritance. The closer we get to our family of origin the younger we feel. Old family dynamics and memories of past gatherings layer our experience and can poison the best of occasions. In these circumstances, isolation, loneliness, resentment and past shames can be pointers towards understanding, compassion and genuine healing.  This is a workshop for both therapists AND for members of the general public.

Shame and Betrayal
A workshop with Juliet Grayson and William Ayot
Monday 11th January 2021 6-8pm GMT

Like the cruelest of conjurer’s tricks, betrayal leaves us exposed and belittled. The shame of betrayal erodes trust and leaves us prey to feelings of hopeless revenge and bitter cynicism. Both betrayed and betrayer find themselves in an ugly dance as they renegotiate (or flee from) broken relationships, their sense of identity, and their damaged views of the world. Avoiding false forgiveness, it is possible, by unpicking the shame of the experience, to begin to rebuild and move forward.  This is a workshop for both therapists AND for members of the general public.

The Most Important Relationship Skill
A workshop with Juliet Grayson
Monday 25th January 2021 1-3pm GMT

Lack of self-differentiation not only creates relationship problems, but also generates tremendous inner turmoil. This person may get furious because they feel controlled by someone who wants to them to do something they don’t wish to do, but feels unsafe expressing their feelings openly. They may silence themselves around others and feel inauthentic, unheard, or invisible, with their needs unmet.
This workshop is designed for therapists AND for members of the general public.

Treating Shame
A workshop with Juliet Grayson and William Ayot
Monday 8th February 2021 6-8pm GMT

NB THIS WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED FOR 15th and has been moved to 8th Feb.
Many therapists don’t notice shame in their clients.   Others notice, but lack the confidence to tackle this slippery topic.  And there are those therapists who cannot bear to address a client’s shame because they have not explored their own.
It is said that if a client is stuck then shame will often be at the root of that.
Juliet Grayson and WiIliam Ayot will bring together and share a wide range of tools and techniques to deal with this pervasive issue in ourselves and our clients.
This is a workshop that will be beneficial for both therapists AND for members of the general public.

MORE ABOUT The Most Important Relationship Skill
A workshop with Juliet Grayson
Monday 29th March 2021 1-3pm BST

Juliet Grayson will deepen the discussion on the topics of

  • self differentiation,
  • emotional fusion,
  • a reflected sense of self,
  • self validated intimacy and other validated intimacy
  • the tyranny of the lowest common denominator
  • and steps to come out of emotional fusion and into self-differentiation

Self-differentiation is a way of being.  It enables people to be fully connected during an emotionally charged problem without controlling the people involved, rushing in to fix it, or emotionally withdrawing.
Where there is a lack of differentiation, one person is dependent upon the other for their emotional balance.  This is known as emotional fusion.  There is emotional togetherness but it lacks the freedom of individuality.  Personal choices are constantly set aside to keep the peace.  Undifferentiated people cannot separate their feelings from their thoughts.  They get overwhelmed by feelings and unable to think logically.
There are three common patterns of emotional fusion.  One will stifle their partner and be controlling, another will be adaptive and need reassurance and validation.  The third kind will be skilled at disconnecting and emotionally cutting off.
