This is part of the Advanced Certificate in the Clinical Application of Attachment Theory
The overarching message of this module is that therapeutic change is closely connected to the development and restoration of the capacity to mentalise, also known as reflective functioning (RF), in therapeutic change and the resolution of attachment trauma. The programme is grounded in the understanding that the sense of self develops through being mentalised within relationships and that this developmental process continues throughout life. Mentalising therefore provides an important framework for understanding both psychological difficulties and the therapeutic relationship, particularly when working with clients who have experienced insecure attachment, developmental trauma or adverse early experiences. By helping clients develop a more reflective understanding of their internal experiences and of other people’s minds, therapy can provide an opportunity to make sense of attachment experiences, recognise previously automatic relational patterns and develop new ways of relating.
What you can expect from this workshop is to:
- Understand the development of mentalising/RF and its relationship to the phenomena of representation and the concept of internal working models
- Identify reduced or disrupted mentalising/RF and explore how it can affect emotional regulation, relationships, self-understanding and leads to ineffective or no strategies to manage distress
- Practice and develop one’s own capacity to mentalise more effectively within clinical situations and bring greater empathy to difficult situations
- Learn the links between the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and mentalising and how the AAI can be used clinically
- Practice AAI questions, experience their clinical value and learn how to identify attachment styles by assessing the coherence of how a person responds to the AAI questions
- Explore how patterns associated with insecure or traumatic relationships can be transmitted across generations
- Learn the key research and theory which links trauma with attachment experiences in early years
- Learn the basic neuroscience of trauma
- Identify the clinical presentation of trauma, and the ways in which individuals may defend against traumatic memories and associated emotional experiences including shame and guilt
- Apply an attachment informed approach to attachment trauma including the McCluskey systems model of the self.
- Reflect on the therapist’s own emotional regulation and self-care when working with attachment complex or emotionally difficult material
Throughout the programme, participants are encouraged to connect theory with clinical practice. Learning is supported through presentation, discussion of a video interview concerning attachment trauma, small and large-group discussion, experiential learning and skills practice. You will be encouraged to bring your own case work to apply the course learning.

Approved for CPD : This course will give you 14 hours of CPD.
Our expectation: Is that you will attend this workshop for the full length of the course, have your video on, your mobile off, and fully participate.
- There are some online talks on zoom that allow you to come and go, or to choose not to participate in the exercise and breakout rooms. This culture has started to creep into our workshops. We have even had people say they want to leave to go and pick up children from school or walk their dog! People dropping in and out is very disruptive – especially when there may be group exercises that are planned for the same group to participate in a number of times.
- Because of this, we want to be clear about our expectations. This workshop has been planned with the assumption that you, and everyone else, will attend for the full time.
- So please be clear, that if you book on this workshop, we expect you to attend for the whole time, to participate in the breakout rooms and exercises and have your video switched on.
- Please also put your mobile to one side and on silent – checking your phone or texting will mean that you miss material. So we request that you only check your phone during breaks.
Cancellations: Any request to change (eg defer to alternative dates) or cancel your place at a workshop, that is made at less than 21 days before the course start date will be charged in full. Any cancellation / amendments / requests to defer before 21 days, will be subject to a 12.5% handling charge.
