About the event

Using the Pesso-Boyden method of somatic, or body-based psychotherapy, Cheryl (CJ) will help the group explore how we can provide experiences that were missing when you (if you are the client) were a child – to help you deal better with challenges in your daily life.

CJ will start the day with a short introduction to help everyone ‘arrive’. We’ll then explore what it feels like to ask for what we want, and what happens when someone responds to us in a way that feels just right, which are key elements of working with the Pesso-Boyden method.

There will be 3 structures (client sessions) and a check-out at the end of the day. Everyone will have the chance to observe or participate in other people’s work. This can be almost as powerful as having a structure yourself, as you can piggyback on someone else’s experience and benefit from new perspectives.

About the method

Al and Diane Pesso developed the Pesso Boyden Psychomotor System of Psychotherapy (Pesso-Boyden method) after working with dancers and noticing what happens when they slow down and connect with the felt sense in less easeful movements – thoughts, memories or emotions emerged from the unconscious memory. When the dancers then received longed-for interactions in response to these thoughts, memories or emotions, shifts began to happen leading to a sense of pleasure, satisfaction, meaning and connectedness. From these observations, the Pesso’s developed the method to provide a felt sense experience of longed-for interactions being met, rewiring the brain to create a better basis from which to respond to life.

About CJ

I’m a somatic therapist and over the past 15 years I’ve had the honour of helping clients to find ease in their bodies, relief from physical and emotional pain, begin to feel and understand emotions, learn to make choices about how and when to express emotions in relationships, and find a sense of agency and power. I completed training in the Pesso Boyden method in February 2019.

I’m fascinated by what it means to be human and the ways in which we can engage, enjoy, and experience life in a fulfilling way. I have focused on researching the ways in which we can get the most from life and understanding what can limit us and stop us living freely and fiercely, particularly as a result of trauma and life challenges. A cornerstone of my work is gently engaging with the body, the mind, and the brain so that we can reconnect with all of our senses and learn to engage with our own nervous system.
