Neurodivergence, Sex, and Relationships
Content: This 1-day experiential training offers you the opportunity to further develop your competence and confidence when working with neurodivergent adults. This includes looking at different presentations you may work with, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD), Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), Dyslexia, Alexithymia, Synaesthesia, and Tourette’s Syndrome. By moving away from pathologising psychiatric terms such as “disorder” and taking a more developmental approach, we can explore and discuss some of the experiences of neurodivergent clients and their common presenting issues concerning sex and relationships. These include sensory processing issues in relation to sex, rejection sensitivity in dating, and alexithymia and OCD in relationships. We also investigate the intersectionality between neurodivergence and gender, asexuality, non-monogamy, and kink. Woven into the day are eight fun and reflective activities for you to try and potentially to use with neurodivergent clients. Lastly, there will be time to reflect on the appropriate adjustments you’re willing and able to make in your practice.

Pre workshop preparation: There will be 30mins of preparation required for this workshop Who should attend: This course is open to all counsellors, psychotherapists, psychosexual therapists, coaches and health workers who wish to deepen their understanding and thinking about Neurodivergence, sex, and relationships.- There are some online talks on zoom that allow you to come and go, or to choose not to participate in the exercise and breakout rooms. This culture has started to creep into our workshops. We have even had people say they want to leave to go and pick up children from school or walk their dog! People dropping in and out is very disruptive – especially when there may be group exercises that are planned for the same group to participate in a number of times.
- Because of this, we want to be clear about our expectations. This workshop has been planned with the assumption that you, and everyone else, will attend for the full time. So please be clear, that if you book on this workshop, we expect you to attend for the whole time, to participate in the breakout rooms and exercises and have your video switched on. Please also put your mobile to one side and on silent – checking your phone or texting will mean that you miss material. So we request that you only check your phone during breaks.
